Al Jahili Fort, Al Ain
Al Jahili Fort is one of the largest historic forts in the UAE and an important landmark in Al Ain. Construction began in 1891 under Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, also known as Zayed the First, and was completed in 1898. The fort served both as a defensive structure and as a summer residence for Abu Dhabi’s ruling family, who traditionally travelled to Al Ain during the hotter months.
The original complex consisted of a square fortified enclosure and a distinctive four-storey circular tower. Following several phases of restoration and rehabilitation, the fort now combines its historic architecture with modern visitor facilities while retaining its traditional character.
Today, visitors can explore the restored fort and learn about the history of Al Ain and its ruling family. One of the site’s main attractions is a permanent exhibition dedicated to Wilfred Thesiger, the British explorer and photographer known in the Arab world as Mubarak bin London. The exhibition presents his photographs and documents his journeys across the Arabian Peninsula during the 1940s and 1950s.
Al Jahili Fort also includes a temporary exhibition space and a visitor information centre. Its location near Al Jahili Park makes it a useful stop when exploring Al Ain’s wider cultural and heritage attractions.
