Dubai Racing Club, Dubai
Dubai Racing Club, formed in 1992 to develop and promote horse racing in Dubai, held its first races under formal rules that March at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse. The club is closely tied to the Dubai World Cup, first run in 1996 with a purse of US$4 million and 11 competing horses, an event born from the vision of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to establish Dubai as a global centre for the sport.
Since 2010, racing has been staged at Meydan Racecourse, which replaced Nad Al Sheba as the club’s home. Spread across roughly 7.5 million square metres, Meydan’s grandstand runs 1.6km — the longest in the world — beneath a cantilevered, solar-panelled crescent roof, seating up to 60,000 spectators across more than 70 corporate suites, a five-star trackside hotel with nearly 300 rooms, and a “Sky Bubble” lounge that can host 5,000 guests. The season’s Dubai Racing Carnival runs from November to March and builds toward Dubai World Cup night, now the world’s richest race day with total prize money of US$30.5 million across nine races, including US$12 million for the title race itself.
