Dhayah Fort, Ras Al Khaimah
Dhayah Fort is the last intact hilltop fort in the UAE and one of Ras Al Khaimah’s most significant historical landmarks. Built in the 19th century on a rocky hill roughly 18 kilometres northeast of RAK City, near Al Rams, the fort is best known as the site of the final stand of the Qawasim against British forces during the Persian Gulf campaign of 1819 — a siege that lasted several weeks before the fort fell, paving the way for the treaty that followed.
Visitors reach the fort via a zigzag staircase of more than 200 steps carved into the hillside, with a wooden handrail and information boards along the way explaining the region’s history. The climb rewards visitors with 360-degree panoramic views across the surrounding date-palm gardens, the Hajar Mountains and the Gulf coastline.
A visit typically takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on how long visitors spend at the top, and is often combined with other nearby attractions such as Jebel Jais or Suwaidi Pearl Farm. There is a rest house at the base of the hill, and entry to the fort is free.
