Museum of Illusions, Dubai
The intriguing and perplexing Museum of Illusions in Dubai captivates guests with its interactive exhibitions and optical illusions. Located in the Heritage Area of the scenic Al Seef district along Dubai Creek, it is the Dubai edition of an international museum chain that first opened in Zagreb, Croatia, and this location is one of the largest in the chain.
The museum houses more than 80 hands-on exhibits spread across several themed zones — including holograms, stereograms, and rooms built around optical and cognitive tricks — with no “do not touch” signs anywhere; visitors are encouraged to interact with, and photograph, everything on display. Standout exhibits include the Vortex Tunnel, a spinning cylinder that challenges your sense of balance; the Ames Room, which makes people appear to shrink or grow depending on where they stand; and the Upside Down Room, a favourite for photos.
A typical visit takes around 60–90 minutes and works well as part of a longer stroll through Al Seef, easily combined with an abra ride across the creek or a walk through the nearby Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Designed to be fun as much as educational, the museum explains the science behind each illusion as visitors go, making it a distinctive experience where reality and perception are constantly tested.
