Sakamkam Fort
Sakamkam Fort stands on a hill just north of Fujairah City, close to the Fujairah Free Zone. Built in 1879 by Hamad bin Abdullah Al Sharqi, the fort served principally as a defensive outpost protecting the district around nearby Fujairah Fort, monitoring the surrounding area against raids and tribal conflict through the 19th century.
Constructed from local materials — black stone, mud and palm fronds — on an elevated rocky position, the fort is dominated by a round watchtower offering a 360-degree view over modern Fujairah City. Beyond its defensive role, Sakamkam was historically a focal point of community life, where residents gathered to discuss local affairs and where festivals and celebrations were held in the square before the fort.
Now restored, the fort’s round tower remains its most distinctive feature, and its elevated position makes it a worthwhile short stop for panoramic views over the city, especially when combined with a visit to Fujairah Fort itself.
