Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of Abu Dhabi’s most iconic landmarks and one of the world’s largest mosques. Built as a symbol of tolerance, peace and cultural dialogue, the mosque brings together architectural influences from different Islamic traditions and cultures. Construction began in 1996 and the mosque opened for worship in 2007.

The mosque is renowned for its white marble architecture, 82 domes, four minarets and intricate Islamic artwork. Its largest dome, located above the main prayer hall, measures approximately 32.6 metres in diameter and 84 metres high. The mosque’s design incorporates Moroccan, Mughal, Mamluk, Ottoman and Fatimid influences, creating a distinctive combination of architectural styles.

The main prayer hall features one of the mosque’s most recognisable artistic elements: its enormous hand-knotted carpet, together with seven distinctive crystal chandeliers. The main prayer hall can accommodate approximately 7,800 worshippers, while two additional prayer halls provide space for daily prayers.

Visitors can explore the mosque through official cultural tours, which explain its architecture, Islamic traditions and cultural significance. The centre also offers the Al Deleel multimedia guide in 14 languages, incorporating interactive and augmented-reality features. The wider visitor experience includes exhibitions, religious and cultural programmes, Souq Al Jami’, cafés, restaurants and a gift shop. Modest dress is required for all visitors.
