Louvre Abu Dhabi

Located on Saadiyat Island, Louvre Abu Dhabi is a universal museum developed through an intergovernmental partnership between the United Arab Emirates and France. Opened in 2017, the museum presents artworks and objects from different civilisations side by side, highlighting connections between cultures and the shared experiences of humanity.

The museum’s collection spans thousands of years of human history, from ancient archaeological objects to modern and contemporary artworks. Rather than organising its collection strictly by geography, Louvre Abu Dhabi places works from different cultures and periods together to explore common themes, ideas and artistic influences.

One of the museum’s defining features is its architecture, designed by French architect Jean Nouvel. The complex is covered by a vast 180-metre-wide dome made from layers of geometric patterns. Sunlight passing through the dome creates the distinctive “rain of light” effect across the museum’s spaces and waterfront promenades.

Alongside its permanent collection, Louvre Abu Dhabi presents a changing programme of temporary exhibitions, cultural events, educational activities and workshops. Visitors can also explore the Children’s Museum, which provides interactive exhibitions and activities designed for younger visitors and families. The museum’s waterfront setting and dome also form an important part of the visitor experience, with outdoor spaces offering views across the Arabian Gulf and the surrounding Saadiyat Cultural District.
