Majlis Al Midfa, Sharjah
Majlis Al Midfa is a historic cultural landmark in the Heart of Sharjah and one of the most distinctive examples of traditional architecture in the emirate. The majlis was associated with Ibrahim Bin Mohammed Al Midfa, an influential Emirati intellectual and publisher who established the UAE’s first newspaper in 1927. The site became an important gathering place for intellectuals, merchants and local figures who met to discuss poetry, literature, politics and current affairs.
The building is particularly notable for its distinctive circular barjeel, or wind tower, which is recognised as the only circular wind tower of its kind in the UAE. The traditional structure provided natural ventilation before modern air conditioning and represents an important example of the region’s architectural heritage. The site also preserves objects associated with the Al Midfa family, including a carved pearl chest and a decorative silver dagger.
Located behind Souq Al Arsa, Majlis Al Midfa forms part of the historic Heart of Sharjah district and can be incorporated into heritage walking routes through the area’s traditional houses, souqs and museums. Its connection to the development of journalism and intellectual life in the UAE also gives it significance beyond its architectural value.
