Kalba Ice Factory, Sharjah
Note: Kalba Ice Factory is open to visitors during exhibitions and programmes. Exhibition spaces may temporarily close during installation periods, so visitors should check the current programme before visiting.
Kalba Ice Factory is a former industrial facility on Sharjah’s east coast that has been transformed into a contemporary arts and cultural venue by Sharjah Art Foundation. Located beside Kalba Creek and the Al Qurm mangrove reserve, the restored complex combines industrial heritage, contemporary art and community spaces within a distinctive coastal setting.
Originally built as an ice storage and fish-feed facility, the 1970s industrial structure was restored while preserving much of its original architecture, including its distinctive saw-tooth roof and large open interior spaces. The venue provides exhibition areas suitable for large-scale installations and performances, as well as spaces for artists, workshops and community activities.
Kalba Ice Factory regularly forms part of Sharjah Art Foundation’s wider programme, including exhibitions, artist residencies and Sharjah Biennial projects. Its location next to Kalba Creek and the mangroves also creates a distinctive connection between contemporary art, industrial heritage and Sharjah’s natural environment.
