Qasr Al Muwaiji, Al Ain

Qasr Al Muwaiji is a historic mudbrick palace and fort in Al Ain, built in the early 20th century during the time of Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan and his son Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. With its square enclosure, projecting towers and imposing entrance, the palace is an important example of early 20th-century Emirati architecture.

The palace became particularly significant when Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan became the Ruler’s Representative in the Al Ain Region in 1946. He established Qasr Al Muwaiji as his diwan, or seat of governance, as well as his family home. His eldest son, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, was born at Qasr Al Muwaiji in 1948 and spent part of his youth there.

Today, visitors can explore the restored fort and its contemporary glass-walled exhibition hall, which presents the history of Qasr Al Muwaiji, the Al Ain region and members of the Abu Dhabi ruling family connected to the palace. The exhibition also explores archaeological discoveries from the site and Sheikh Khalifa’s life and achievements.

The experience can also be combined with a visit to the nearby Al Muwaiji Oasis, one of Al Ain’s smaller oases. The oasis contains approximately 21,000 palm trees and continues to use the traditional falaj irrigation system, offering visitors an opportunity to understand the connection between Al Ain’s historic settlements, water systems and agriculture. The fort is free to enter, and visitors can also book a free guided tour.
