Bait Mohammed bin Khalifa, Al Ain

Bait Mohammed bin Khalifa is a historic house in Al Mu’tarid, Al Ain, and part of the Cultural Sites of Al Ain UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in 1958 for Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, the house reflects the UAE’s transition during the 1950s and 1960s, combining traditional Emirati architectural elements with newer materials and construction techniques.

The house provides an insight into the social, architectural and cultural changes that shaped the UAE during this period. Its design differs from the traditional fortified residences commonly associated with Al Ain, while retaining the historic tradition of a community leader opening his home to local residents.

Following careful conservation, Bait Mohammed bin Khalifa has been transformed into a community centre for residents and visitors. Its permanent exhibition explores the nation’s social and architectural heritage of the 1950s and 1960s, while flexible spaces host cultural events, activities and programmes throughout the year.

The centre also provides an arts teaching centre and café, making it more than a traditional heritage attraction. Visitors can combine the historical exhibition with cultural activities and spend time within the restored house and its courtyard.
