Sharjah Fort (Al Hisn), Sharjah
Sharjah Fort (Al Hisn) is one of Sharjah’s most important historical landmarks, located in the Heart of Sharjah. Originally built in 1823, the fort served as the residence of the Al Qasimi ruling family and the seat of Sharjah’s government. It was also used for defensive purposes and later as a jail before being restored and converted into a museum.
The two-storey fort is built around a central courtyard and features three defensive towers. Inside, visitors can explore Sharjah’s history through historic photographs, archaeological artefacts, traditional weapons and exhibits documenting the ruling family, government, defence strategies and everyday life in Sharjah around two centuries ago.
The museum also highlights traditional practices and aspects of historic life, including the production of date syrup and the historical justice system. Its educational programmes include workshops, camps, lectures and community events, with activities designed for different age groups and visitors with disabilities. Interactive displays and digital experiences also provide additional ways to explore the fort and its history.
