Sharjah Maritime Museum, Sharjah

Located in the Al Khan area of Sharjah, the Sharjah Maritime Museum explores the deep connection between the sea and the development of the emirate. The museum highlights how coastal communities have relied on the sea for thousands of years, with a particular focus on pearling, fishing, maritime trade and traditional seafaring.

The museum’s displays include traditional wooden dhows, including a full-size pearling boat, as well as fishing and diving equipment, maritime tools and other objects connected to life along the UAE’s coast. Exhibits explain the techniques used by pearl divers and fishermen and the important role that maritime activities played in Sharjah’s economy and society.

One of the museum’s highlights is a natural pearl discovered by archaeologists in a coastal cemetery in Sharjah, believed to be one of the oldest known pearls in the world. Together with the neighbouring Sharjah Aquarium, the museum provides visitors with a broader understanding of the emirate’s relationship with the Arabian Gulf and its marine environment.
