Wahat Al Karama, Abu Dhabi
Wahat Al Karama, meaning “Oasis of Dignity,” is a permanent memorial in Abu Dhabi dedicated to the UAE’s heroes who lost their lives in service of the country. Spanning 46,000 square metres directly opposite Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the site commemorates soldiers, police officers, diplomats and civilians who have sacrificed their lives since the founding of the UAE.
The centrepiece of Wahat Al Karama is the Memorial, designed by British artist Idris Khan. It consists of 31 large aluminium-clad tablets leaning against one another, symbolising unity, solidarity and mutual support between the UAE’s leadership, citizens, residents and those who serve the country.
Beyond the Memorial is the Pavilion of Honour, a quiet space of reflection featuring the names of the UAE’s heroes engraved on individual metal panels made from reclaimed material from UAE Armed Forces vehicles. Seven glass panels at the centre represent the UAE’s seven emirates and display the nation’s Pledge of Allegiance.
The Memorial Plaza provides an open space with views of both Wahat Al Karama and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Its shallow reflective pool and surrounding amphitheatre make it one of the site’s most distinctive spaces, and the plaza is open 24 hours, allowing visitors to experience the memorial at different times of day.
