Al Hayl Castle, Fujairah
Al Hayl Castle sits in Wadi Al Hayl, in the foothills of the Hajar Mountains roughly 13 to 15 kilometres southwest of Fujairah City. Built around 1830, the site combines a fortified residential compound with an associated watchtower on a hill roughly 40 metres above the valley floor, and served as the residence of the ruling Al Sharqi family into the 20th century, playing an important role in defending the surrounding routes and agricultural land.
The residential compound includes majlis rooms, storage areas, bedrooms and a kitchen that visitors can explore, along with an attached majlis decorated with decorative niches. A short flight of steps leads up from the compound to the watchtower itself, where visitors who are up for a climb can reach the upper level via wooden rungs for a view over the valley, the surrounding date palms and the village of Al Hayl below.
The castle fell into disuse through the later 20th century before undergoing restoration between 2006 and 2008, which stabilised the structure using traditional building methods. Some of the inner roads leading to the site can be rough, so a four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended.
