Al Murabba Fort, Al Ain

Al Murabba Fort is a historic mud-brick fort in Al Ain, built in 1948 under the direction of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE. The rectangular structure originally served as a local administration building and later became a police station, reflecting the changing role of Al Ain during the development of the modern UAE.

The fort is an example of traditional local construction, using materials and techniques characteristic of historic Al Ain architecture. Its enclosed courtyard and fortified design provide an insight into how administrative and residential buildings were designed in the oasis city during the mid-20th century.

Located immediately northeast of Al Ain Oasis, Al Murabba Fort forms part of the wider historic landscape of Al Ain. The nearby Mutaredh falaj irrigation system, including its traditional access shafts, further connects the fort with the oasis city’s historic water-management and agricultural traditions. Al Ain’s cultural sites collectively form a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for their archaeological, architectural and cultural significance.
