Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding
Established in 1998, the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU) is a cultural centre dedicated to promoting a greater understanding of Emirati culture, traditions, customs, and everyday life. Located in the historic Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, the centre welcomes visitors from different backgrounds and encourages open dialogue under its motto, “Open Doors, Open Minds.”
SMCCU offers a variety of experiences led by Emirati cultural presenters. Visitors can take part in traditional Emirati meals while learning about local customs and daily life, explore the historic Al Fahidi neighbourhood through guided heritage tours, and visit Jumeirah Mosque as part of dedicated cultural programmes. The centre also offers experiences such as Coffee & Culture, Culture on Wheels, Desert Friends, and the Once Upon a Time Museum.
In addition to its regular public programmes, SMCCU organises workshops and educational activities covering aspects of Emirati culture and traditional crafts. These can include Arabic calligraphy, finjan cup painting, and other cultural workshops, while private and educational programmes are also available for schools, universities, and organisations.
The centre operates from traditional Emirati heritage buildings in Al Fahidi, providing visitors with an opportunity to experience local architecture and hospitality alongside its cultural programmes. Some activities, such as the Open House, also allow visitors to explore traditional clothing, Arabic coffee and sweets, and exhibits related to UAE heritage. With its combination of cultural presentations, traditional cuisine, heritage tours, workshops, and direct interaction with Emirati hosts, SMCCU offers one of Dubai’s most comprehensive opportunities to learn about Emirati culture and heritage.
