Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Ras Al Khaimah

Not to be confused with the much larger Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, this Sheikh Zayed Mosque stands on the old Al Qawasim Corniche road in Ras Al Khaimah’s Dafan Al Khor neighbourhood, and is believed to be one of the oldest continuously used places of worship in the UAE. Prayers are still held here today, connecting the mosque’s history directly to the present.

The mosque’s exterior has been restored using plaster, coral stones and beach rocks, but its underlying architecture preserves the character of the era of Sheikh Saqr bin Rashid Al Qasimi. The most recent restoration was carried out by the Department of Antiquities and Museums under the directives of the current Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah.

Architecturally, the mosque is notable for its 60 supporting columns, a roof traditionally covered with palm fronds, three large entrance doors and 31 windows featuring distinctive geometric carvings. Large enough to accommodate around 1,000 worshippers, the mosque overlooks a hill rising above the Arabian Sea, making it both a historic and a visually striking stop in the Old Town.
